VLANs on one switch

Local networks · free online experiment, runs in your browser with no install or sign-up.

Objective

Ports 1–2 are VLAN 10, port 3 is VLAN 20: A reaches B but not C although all three share a subnet.

Procedure

  1. Run: ping to B succeeds, ping to C fails (100 % loss).
  2. Select the switch and change its VLANs to p1=10 p2=10 p3=10: both pings work.

Theory

A VLAN is a separate broadcast domain. Even ARP broadcasts do not cross VLANs, so A cannot resolve C's address.

Network blocks used

3 × Host / PC, Switch
